ALASAID A CHUAIN, Aisla Craig, pencil, by Ray Leaning

ALASAID A‘ CHUAIN - AILSA CRAIG
'ALASAID A‘ CHUAIN' = 'Elizabeth (Elspeth) of the Ocean'

The name Elizabeth is actually a variation of Elspeth, and refers to Elspeth McCrudden, daughter of infamous Alexander "Sawney" Bean. Local legend holds that Elspeth tried to swim to Ailsa Craig to escape the mob who later hanged her in Girvan.
